With school about to wrap up we thought we’d share with you one of the things we do to encourage our residents to pursue good grades while here at Joy Ranch.
It’s called, quite simply, 100 100’s.
At the beginning of each school year we print out ten papers for each resident. Each of these papers has 10 stars on it. For every 100 they bring home, one star is colored in. For every ten stars residents earn a coupon (for anything from double allowance to a chore pass, a candy bar or bedtime extension!). Fill in ten sheets - equally 100 100’s and earn $20 to spend however you chose. Some residents have chosen snacks, others mermaid blankets or school t-shirts; still others chose toys.
Some residents who come to us have experienced a family crisis that has led to them missing quite a bit of school. The reasons for this are as many as the children who have experienced it and the amount of school they miss is just as varied.
When talking about school I always remember a young girl who came to us halfway through her kindergarten year; each morning when woken for school she would ask if she had to go to school and then cry and cry and cry; she could not understand why she was required to go so often. When she returned from school we would often have one to three hours of homework to do in an effort to catch her up with her classmates. Needless to say this became quite a struggle but with a lot of patience and the help of some amazing teachers, we made it through. Now she is in third grade and thriving. (Though she still doesn’t like to go to school!)
Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
